Help us return to the Academy
The Jefferson Choral Society has a rich history as the oldest and largest adult choir in the greater Lynchburg area. The choir was originally called the Fine Arts Center Chorus and for years held its rehearsals and performances in the old Fine Arts Center located on Thomson Dr. across from Centra’s Lynchburg General Hospital. After the Fine Arts Center building was razed to provide additional parking for the hospital, the choir became “homeless.”
In the ensuing years, the choir has rehearsed and performed in various churches and secular venues throughout the region. JCS singers have long dreamed of performing at the grand Historic Academy Theatre where some of its oldest members recall having gone for entertainment as children during the theater’s heyday. In December of 2019 that dream came true when the theater held its grand re-opening and the Jefferson Choral Society performed in a collaborative concert with the other “resident” arts groups.
Because the cost is high for all performances held in that beautifully restored venue, the JCS launched a campaign last spring to raise funds to send the choir back to the Historic Academy Theatre for future concerts. Our goal is to raise enough money to pay for at least one concert per season in that grand venue. Won’t you help send us back to the Academy?
